For those new to the instrument a piccolo is simply a small flute. The piccolo is also pitched in the key of C. The music for the instrument is written an octave lower than it sounds so that the player can avoid too many leger lines above the staff. The range of the piccolo is from low D to top C and sounds an octave higher than that of the flute. Fingerings on the piccolo correspond to fingerings on the flute.
